This is a twist on our traditional Balkan dessert dish, called Sutlijas, that I grew up eating at every dinner party :) Originally it’s made with rice and milk, sugar and spices, but of course, we are not only going to make it more delicious, but healthier as well. We are going to take out the dairy and sugar, and add sweet protein powder that makes this dish an amazing dessert.
Here we go:
Ingredients with their approximate protein breakdown:
- 1 cup Rice ~4 g protein
- 2 cups Water ~0 g protein
- ½ cup Almond Milk ~0.5 g protein
- 1 tsp Vanilla ~0 g protein
- 1 tsp Cinnamon ~0.1 g protein
- 1 tsp Cardamom ~0.2 g protein
- 10 frozen Blueberries ~0.1 g protein
- 1 scoop Protein Powder (I use Birdman Protein. You can use the code VEGANTOMI to get a discount) ~31 g protein
Estimated total protein:
≈ 30 g protein!
Notes*
-Most of the protein here comes from the protein powder
-Frozen blueberries are often better than fresh because they’re picked at peak ripeness and flash-frozen, which helps preserve (and sometimes increase) antioxidants. Freezing breaks the berry cell walls, making nutrients easier for your body to absorb. They also last much longer, have more consistent nutrition, and work better in cooking or blending.
Directions:
1. WASH THE RICE THOROUGHLY.
2. COOK THE RICE. – Combine the rinsed rice and water in a small pot. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, uncovered. Reduce heat to the lowest setting, cover with a lid, and simmer for 11 minutes.
3. ADD THE MILK, PROTEIN POWDER, VANILLA, CINNAMON AND CARDAMOM TO THE RICE, MIX IT, COVER IT AGAIN AND LET IT SIT FOR 10 min. (do not open the lid)
4. YOU CAN EAT THIS WARM OR COLD, JUST SERVE IT WITH SOME BLUEBERRIES.(or other fruit of your choice)
5. ENJOY.
